Archeological findings shows the precence of human inhabitance in this area
as far back as 10.000 B.C. In the viking-age and early middle-ages the city
first emerges as a tradingplace in the straite between "Sjælland" and "Amager".
In these waters were several smal islands, such as "Slotsholm" (earlier 'Strandholm'),
"Bremerholm" and "Skarholm". ( holm = tiny island ) Todays Copenhagen is built
around and on top of these islands.
Through time there has been several castles at this place. The first castle
was torn down by the "Hanseats" in 1368. In 1416 Erik of Pommern built a new
castle along with the famous "Blåtårn" (The Blue Tower). Christiansborg is actually
founded on these ruins of the castles, and they can be seen today below "Folketinget".
Should get around these parts, then dont forget to visit "Tøjhusmuseet" and
the National Museum.
Copenhagen has a lot to offer the whole year. In this wonderfull City you willfind
an amazing combination of big City and proviensiel and cozy enviroments. Copenhagen
is the place where to see old ladies smoking cerutes, and drinking the local
liquor called " Snaps". It is also the place where to find cold Danes being
warmed up by the sun and the nationalsport beerdrinking, in one of the many
outdoors restaurants. "Nyhavn" used to be a wild place, frequented mostly by
sailors and hookers, now you will find the largest number of outdoorsrestaurants
in Copenhagen located in a radius of 300 meters. The hookers and the sailors
might still be there somewhere in the calajdoskopic crowd of nationalities during
a short hectic summerperiod where everybody are having a good time in the former
redlight district.
| The Little Mermaid, from a fairytale by H.C.A. (Hans Christian Andersen), about a little mermaid who falls in love with a human prince. The pensive maiden sits on rocks just a few feet into the harbor on the north side of the city. She can be reached by a short stroll from Langelinie -- a picturesque quay that surrounds the Kastellet (Citadel), a 17th-century fort -- or via one of the Mermaid buses that depart frequently from the Radhuspladsen (Town Hall). |
The little mermaid in Copenhagen is famous because of two things. The first
is because of the fairytail by HC Andersen, and the second thing is for the
" five star disapointment" the tourists get when facing that little mermaid.
She is tiny and very inconvienent located in a boring spot. Indeed a very overestimated
little thing she happens to be.
Shopping is a must for many and with a 2 km. long walkingstreet with shops only
" strøget" is frequented by a lot of people around the clock . But leaving Strøget
and taking a walk down the small narrow streets of the City can be an exciting
tour. Here you will find old charming houses, galleries, exotic shops, a lot
of etnic restaurants and a spot of the city with a kind of authentic atmosphere.
Copenhagen was originally no more than a small fishing village and was then
called " Havn = Harbour " The City was officially founded in 1167 by bishop
Absalon who built a fort and a town wall at that place where Christiansborg
Palace now is located.
During the summer a lot of music in Copenhagen. Outdoors rockconcerts, jazz festivals,
etc. is what the tourist will find. Many of theese concerts is free of entrance
fee. The Royal Danish ballet ensemble is famous around the world for its succecfully
performances, and due to old tradition and high standard, they are still worth
seing. Getting tired of the City there is easy acces by train and bus to the
new museum for modern Art called " Arken" located Ca.. 15 km. from the city.
If you would like to find a beach there are several possibilities just 4 km.away
from the Citycenter. When a man named Carstensen opened an area of the old Copenhagen
fortifications at the edge of Copenhagen's town limits in 1843, he probably
had no idea what kind of an entertainment success he was creating. Since then,
280 million people have visited Tivoli Gardens.
What is Tivoli Gardens? As its name brother in Italy, just South of Rome, it
is a garden with many beautiful flowers.
Tulips bloom here by the hundreds of thousands, and most of the trees have been
in residence since the opening of the Tivoli Gardens. Also, Tivoli is a place
of lights, which makes Tivoli a very special place to visit once it gets dark.
You have to go to Tivoli twice (or for a long time) if you want to experience
both atmospheres of Tivoli: In the daytime the abundance of flowers, and in
the night time the many lights and an atmosphere that could be taken directly
from a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
